Ladyface wins medals at the 2015 L.A. International Beer Competition - 04/23/2015

The 15^th Annual Los Angeles International Beer Competition took place this month at the Fairplex in which breweries compete against each other for a medal in their respective category of beer. An esteemed panel of judges used a blind-tasting method to award medals to the best beers in their class. This year, Ladyface took home two Silver medals: one for Ladyface IPA in the category of English style IPA and one for Conejo Lager in the category of German Style Marzën. Ladyface also won the Bronze medal for Verrückt Weizen in the Wood and Barrel Aged Sour category. We are thrilled with our success at the competition and extend our congratulations to the other winning breweries! See the full list here.

Verrückt Weizen also won Bronze in the San Diego International Beer Competition.

5th Anniversary Brewmasters Dinner - 01/28/2015

I have never been so spoiled in a culinary event as I have by Ladyface's own Chef, Adrian Gioia. Every quarter, he moves mountains to create something truly unique that the restaurant has never served. This menu was no different.

The theme was Wood, a traditional gift for the 5th Anniversary, which I suppose symbolizes strength in the construction of a relationship, and for us, putting down roots as a long-term presence in the community. Brewmaster Dave carried the wooden load on this one, pulling out beers from oak barrels that had been squirreled away for 12 month or more. Adrian's menu teased the theme along with earthy, structural forms in the way of layers and techniques at every course.

The Amuse Bouche was simply called "Time Capsule," and essentially an egg drop soup, only with a whole egg suspended in a gelatinous inversion of pork broth and served chilled with Dérailleur Bière de Garde as its compliment.

The first Course was dubbed "duck pop tart" by the admirers around the table, a tartine of duck rillette and gouda fondue. Belgian dark strong ales are a classic pairing with duck, so our 5th Anniversary ale, a barrel-aged cellar blend of 2013 La Trappistine and 2014 Anniversary quadruple brewed with raspberries, hit it's mark.

The next course, was more decadent with butternut squash risotto and pork belly. The caramelized crisp top and fatty layers of the dish were expunged by the sourness of Onager Golden Wild ale fermented with Brettanomyces and Calamondin citrus fruit.

Even if I was already stuffed, then came grilled Hangar Steak with a plump king oyster mushroom emerging from its underbelly, and polished off easily with the oakiness of Midnight Special, a lightly smoked Scotch ale.

Two desserts followed: one savory and one sweet. Cherries Jubilee would not be complete with out a torchon of Foie Gras (since the California ban is now lifted) and a lemon pôt de crème, washed back with 2012 Blue-belly Barley wine aged in Makers Mark barrels to seal the citrus kiss goodnight.

Brews or Bust - 01/27/2015

The Arts District in downtown LA. I love this part of town, once decrepit, but great bones of buildings now revitalized with restaurants, breweries, galleries, and graffiti (but art-quality). I stand at the fortress door that is the head-quarters for Keep-A-Breast Foundation on Traction Ave. trying to figure out how to get inside and join my boobie friends, Devon and Ting, where we are meeting tonight to make plaster casts of our breasts. In their loft, Keep-A-Breast makes casts--sometimes for pre-masectomy recording purposes--to support breast cancer awareness education. These casts are then beautifully painted, sculpted and decorated by artists to be sold as an art piece to support the cause. If all goes according to plan, we will cast up some of the most renown beer boobs in the West, design and showcase them for sale at the Great American Beer Fest in Denver this year. The Lady is not what she seems - 09/18/2014

Ladyface Mountain, one of Agoura Hills' defining geographic features, climbs for 2,031 feet above sea level and can be seen from miles away. Legend has it that the indigenous Chumash Indians sat high atop the peak of the mountain to keep a lookout on the entire valley, and that they named the mountain "Ladyface" because of the topography of its ridge, which appears to be a lady looking into the skies while awaiting the return of her lover. In the early 1900's, the mountain's base became a stop for travelers along the Camino Real, offering water from natural springs. Today, the mountain provides a beautiful backdrop for the Ladyface patio, and is a popular hiking trail for locals and visitors alike.

Maltose Falcons Celebrate 40 Years! - 09/10/2014

As a collaborative project to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Maltose Falcons--the oldest homebrew club in America-we invited members of the club into the Ladyface brewhouse to craft one of their favorite recipes, a Double IPA. Double Down was brewed as a club collaboration for the 2004 American Homebrewers Association Conference in Las Vegas as one of three beers presented to the attendees, a great honor.
Double Down will gaze up at you with a hop-hazy, golden color and a white foam top. The Falcon's hopping schedule was delivered in frequent doses to achieve a nicely balanced--but on the bitter side of--double IPAs with a moderately intense aroma of citrus-forward hops. European base malts and light biscuit notes from the Munich and Biscuit specialty grains add body and balance; crystal malts only provide color with little sweetness. Finish is clean and sharp from heavy dry hopping with a touch of alcohol, and overall, highly quaffable for a 8.8% beer. Thanks to all Falcons for their hard work and execution of a great recipe. Ladyface named Small Business of the Year - 09/10/2014

On Monday, June 16th, Ladyface Ale Companie was honored by Senator Fran Pavley at the California Small Business Day™ 2014 as small business of the year in the 27th District. California Small Business Day recognizes small businesses each year for their contribution to the state’s economy. Small business contributes to 75% of California’s gross state product and over half of the state’s private sector jobs.

Beers Made By Walking - 09/10/2014

Ladyface is excited to be a part of this year's Beers Made By Walking event during GABF! A Foraged and Indigenous component was added to this years event, which usually only features beers that are inspired by hiking in Colorado and made in either CO, OR, or WA. We will join four other breweries that use foraged, wild, and indigenous ingredients to create what the festival is calling "place-based beers", which will be served in a special section at the festival. Ladyface Trébuchet was created by aging Chaparral Saison in Semler Sauvignon Blanc barrels with lactobacillus for 26 months, creating a sour character with integrated honey, green apple & tannin from the addition of crushed Sauvignon Blanc grapes, harvested locally at Semler’s Malibu Family Wines Estate. This beer calls to the beauty of place-based beer through collaboration of local and independent businesses. The honey is from locally sourced sage.

Ladyface Medals at 2014 L.A. & S.D. Intl. Beer Competitions - 07/29/2014

Ladyface Ale Companie was a winner this year at the 2014 Los Angeles International Beer Competition as Trébuchet™ took the Gold medal in the American-style Sour Ale category, Brett Blossom with Silver in the American Style Brett Ale category and Chesebro IPA in the Imperial India Pale Ale category. Conducted as a blind tasting, the competition is registered with the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) and the Brewers Association. The Conejo Valley craft brewery, also medaled at the 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 competitions.
