Ladyface® Red Rye, our single-hopped American red ale, this year features Nelson Sauvin hops, a varietal grown in New Zealand. Named after the Sauvignon Blanc grape, it is known for its strong fruity flavor and aroma resembling white wine, fresh crushed grapes or gooseberries. To celebrate our 500th batch brewed at Ladyface and marching though our 5th year, we put a special "Cinq Cents" twist on our Trois Filles Tripel and raised it a few degrees to make a higher strength ale. This is a full-bodied beer that is deceptively strong with dominating flavors of Belgian yeast, crisp malty tones, and fruity esters. With light golden hues, its dense white, rocky head of foam offers an intense aroma of tropical fruit, bananas and a hint of European hops in the background. Double Down IPA is a collaborative project to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Maltose Falcons. Double Down will gaze up at you with a hop-hazy, golden color and a white foam top. A frequent hopping schedule creates a nicely balanced double IPA with a moderately intense aroma of citrus-forward hops. European base malts and light biscuit notes from the Munich and Biscuit specialty grains add body and balance; crystal malts only provide color with little sweetness. This month's barrel-aged beer release: Verrückt Weizen began with Ladyface Weizenbock, our dark German wheat beer added to cabernet sauvignon barrels. To sour and create a "wild wheat" ale, we inoculated the barrels with a wild yeast blend to give it a traditional Belgian funkiness layered over the the ale's sweet raisin & chocolate beginnings.

Dérailleur® bière-de-garde (“beer for keeping”) is a deep golden ale brewed to celebrate the global passion for cycling. Named after a bicycle’s gear-changing mechanism, this ale is malty and rustic, with a spicy yeast character. Subtle flavors of French oak were derived from ageing in Rhône varietal Mourvèdre wine barrels. This year's release is a special blend of 1 and 2 year old versions; the older barrels provide mild acidity and the yearling contributes the oak and rustic, bready malt character. The resulting blend is an excellent example of a truly French farmhouse-style cellar creation.

The fourth in a series of experimental American IPAs from Ladyface: A very generously-hopped IPA, but in the most benevolent way. Mashtun-hopped with whole leaf Simcoe--no bittering hops--only a flavor hop addition of Apollo syrup, it's finished with a kiss of Equinox, leaving it "clean and zippy." This new ale is extremely light in color but with a heart of gold using Maris Otter barley for a rich, malty body.

Agoura Hills is home to hundreds of heritage oak trees so it's only fitting that we named our oaked ale after our city. Agoura Ale is deep amber in color with a dense, white head of foam. Noticeable oak aromas and flavors impart a roasted, vanilla character and build the structure and body of the ale. Moderate bitterness from citrusy hops rolls into soft complexity from crystal and aromatic malts, and finishes with subtle caramel sweetness. A new Flemish red ale, all funky and old... This special Belgian Flemish Red-style ale is a long-anticipated release from Ladyface's "Ingenuity Series", an ale aged two years in Napa Cabernet barrels. Flamberge--meaning "flame blade"--is an undulating long sword; our red-hued, barrel-aged invention is a complex sour ale with strong alcohol, tannic and sharply tart sensations that ripple across the palette. A high carbonation level yields a dry champagne-like effervescence and makes this style a traditional pairing companion to the Belgian classic dish, Carbonnade de Bœuf. It is also a perfect ale to slice through a creamy cheesecake!

Ladyface Brewmaster David and Co-founder Jean-Luc share a love for Orval, a Trappist ale recipe that has been held elusively under the guard of the Cistercian monks. In 2013, the two conspired to create a California-inspired clone recipe. The Ladyface version, Vallis Aurea (latin for Golden Valley), is a dry-hopped amber-gold ale that underwent 100% barrel fermentation for 26 months with saison and brett yeast strains. A lively carbonation produces a pillowy head and aromas of Belgian yeast fruitiness, oak, spice, and earthy hops. Flavors start with hops but yield to light caramel and fresh bread malt character intertwined with spicy yeast, oak, alcohol, and a light wild character with a dry finish.

As anyone born in Northern Europe will attest, there is nothing better than a nice beer after a long bicycle ride! In that spirit, Ladyface is a sponsor and will provide “recovery” drinks to the athletes participating to the Malibu Gran Fondo (“big ride” in Italian) on March 5 &6. Start & finish will be at the Westlake Four Seasons Hotel.
This world-class event inspired after the famous European Gran Fondos, Etapes du Tour, and other Cyclosportifs, is organized by our friends at Serious Cycling and will see riders pedal 100 miles over some of the classic and storied routes along PCH and the Santa Monica mountains. If you train regularly, think you’re up to the challenge, and want to ride next to some pro riders (at least for a little while) check the website and commit. It’s going to be epic!

Historically brewed with the same species used in the classic dish, Escargots à la Bourguignonne, it was quite the process (a snail's pace, you might say) for Brewer Dave to source the creatures from Burgundy.
Things went a bit awry when, after a good soaking in Cognac, dozens of the drunken critters got loose. Slime trails posed a serious slip-and-fall hazard in the brewery, but our intrepid snail wranglers gathered up all the escapees and their eventual addition in the kettle imparted an earthy, nutty quality to the ale. So enjoy Bière d'Escargot on the traditional première jour d'Avril release date. Just watch for pieces of shell caught between your tongue and cheek.
